I am incredibly blessed and lucky to be the primary caretaker of my family’s backyard. It’s an astounding amount of work, but I have been conditioned to enjoy and appreciate it. Not to sound overly morbid, but I hope my last day alive would be to put in a day of work in the garden, tell my family I love them, and sit down in the shade of a tree I planted, and fall asleep and pass peacefully. Maybe when I’m 80 or a 100 with grandchildren.
The future belongs to those that show up and I fully intend to plant trees where I might not be able to enjoy the shade and there are no guarantees future generations will continue the love and work I put into my garden, and that’s okay. I’m here… for now.
Pictured are pomegranate trees, two in the backyard, two blood orange trees, a pomelo tree, and a bunch of seedlings I am working on. In the ground are corn and beans. I started the corn way way way way too early in February like a mad man. I should have waited until April, but hey! But seeds are cheap and I love watching seeds germinate and sprout. It never gets old. That demonstrates my ability to give life and put my time, talent, and treasure into making things beautiful and hopefully tasty too. I don’t work for free! I expect literal fruits from my labor!!!

It’s me in my pond cleaning garb. I prefer a water resistant jacket, but when it comes to cleaning the pond it can get rrrreallllyyyy messy.

Dwarf blueberry plant with some fruit!

Cowpots are great! Made from cow manure, but without the stink. Biodegradable and lets roots pass through. Indispensable to me.
I failed my artichoke plant this year. It collapsed on itself.
Probably my worst “L” for the season. A catastrophic failure I hope to learn from. -
My backyard pond has three biofilters that I connected to a single water pump in a Frankenstein like fashion with pipes everywhere. It works for my purposes and keeps the fish from poisoning themselves, but the main issue is sludge build up if I don’t clean it out. So I did.
Took me a month longer than I had anticipated to since I accidentally almost cut off my left index finger. 20 sutures were remove and the wound is closed so I thought to myself… let’s officially start spring. Without further ado…

My preferred water conditioner.
Portable pressure washer to flush out sludge.

Keeping the water flowing while cleaning the filter pads.

Handy battery level indicator lets me know when to swap batteries.
“Free” hookups!
Solar generator charging a battery to charge smaller batteries.

A cup to stop the flow of water to the water pump chamber so I can scoop out debris.

A tear in the tubing. I cut off the bad part and reattached the “bib” to the intact hose. No leaks!
